Helmet Diving in Bermuda
If you want to experience diving on your Bermuda vacation and don’t have the correct qualifications or the inclination to get them, helmet diving is the sport for you. In fact helmet divers don’t even have to know how to swim!
Participants go out in a boat to the dive site. On arrival they climb down a ladder until the water is at shoulder height. Once in this position a helmet, which has clear glass plates, is placed over their head and rests on the diver’s shoulders. The diver then climbs down the ladder until he is standing on the ocean floor (around 10 ft. below the surface). Air is supplied to the diver, via a hose connected to the helmet, from a compressor pump on the boat.
The helmet divers then walk along the sea bed accompanied by a guide. Operators usually stop close to a coral reef where divers will get a close-up view of Bermuda’s marine life. The time underwater is typically 30 minutes. Many of the cruise ships visiting Bermuda offer helmet diving as part of their shore excursion program.
