Corporation of Hamilton
The Corporation of Hamilton is an elected body responsible for running the city of Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda and its administrative centre.
It employs over 100 staff and is based at City Hall on Church Street.
Its membership structure is the same as when it was founded in 1795, and consists of a mayor, 3 aldermen, and 5 common councillors. Elections are held every 3 years. Each household and business within the boundaries of the city is eligible to vote.
Members sit on various committees, each chaired by an alderman, and make policy recommendations to the Corporation. Committees include:
- Street – responsible for the maintenance of streets, parking, traffic signs, lighting etc.
- Sanitation-Wastewater – street cleaning, garbage collection
- Parks – responsible for the parks in Hamilton (Victoria, Par-la-Ville etc)
The mayor has the right to veto any decision made by the Corporation.
