Surf Side Beach Club

Set in 5 acres of terraced gardens, the Surf Side Beach Club is a romantic Bermuda hideaway boasting magnificent ocean views. The guest accommodations cascade down towards the azure waters. At their centre lies the delightful Palms Restaurant & Bar. Here, guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, indoors or al fresco around the kidney-shaped freshwater pool.

A pathway, lined with hibiscus and oleander, meanders through the property and leads guests down to the hotel’s small private beach. Despite its moderate size, Surf Side Beach Club has its own hair and beauty salon. The hotel also boasts a Jacuzzi and sauna.

The general manager, Bryony Harvey, has been with the hotel for over 30 years and delights in sharing her knowledge of Bermuda. A section of the Railway Trail lies barely 500m from the property. Guests can join the trail here and take a pleasant stroll to the nature reserve at Warwick Pond. The recently redesigned Belmont Hills Golf Club is just a short taxi ride from the property and the tennis courts at the Elbow Beach hotel are just down the road.

There is a convenient bus stop at the entrance to the hotel. Here guests can easily access Hamilton, the Royal Naval Dockyard, the public beaches at South Shore Park and Astwood Cove.

Our room was in need of a bit of TLC, but having said that it had everything we required and the view was simply stunning. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the housekeeping personnel were extremely efficient. Almost forgot, the price was pretty good too.

I found the room to be perfectly adequate, you could hear the sea crashing in below, and there was also Wi-Fi available in the lobby. The Palm restaurant was a great place to eat, particularly the fresh fish, or if you prefer there's a bus stop at the end of the drive to take you elsewhere. It's also quite competitively priced compared to what you can pay in some places on the island.

I was a bit worried after reading one or two less than glowing reviews, but I needn't have been. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating and far from suffering any inconvenience they even arranged for me to check out late so that I wouldn't have to kill time at the airport. They also do a superb breakfast which is also included in the price.
Jan :
Great little hideaway if you don't want the hustle and bustle of Hamilton or the bigger beach resorts.
Dick :
Stayed in a room with a great view of the ocean as I think most of them have. Housekeeping staff were excellent and did a really good job, and the rest of the staff were similarly enthusiastic and efficient. The beach has lovely pink Bermudan sand and was almost deserted when we were there. A good place to stay if you like a bit of peace and quiet.

I've vacationed at this hotel for over 10 years and sadly, saw its demise as commercialization overtook it. At one time, there was no restaurant, only a coffee shop which was open for breakfast and lunch. One was able to stay in the pool all day and all night. Alas, with the opening of the Palms restaurant, that changed. One was able to "rent" a BBQ and cook on the grounds, in front of one's residence. The staff was always smiling and pleasant and we became very friendly with Brian and Sheila. It felt like coming home to family, since we've vacationed there for over 10 years, sometimes returning 2-3 times during the summer. However, during our last stay, things changed. The staff seemed somewhat aloof, very busy, and really could care less whether we were having a good time or not. It may have had something to do with the deaths of the original owners, with their son taking on management, attempting to sell the hotel. He made improvements, but did he? In building more apartments and upgrading the restaurant, he took away the original charm it once had. It no longer was a loving family hotel, but just one of many interested in making a quick dollar. I have many fond memories and a lot of beautiful pictures of my stay there, but that is all that remains, as it is no longer the same hotel I once knew and loved.

We stayed here late last year and the beach had been taken away by a storm. The manager assured us that they would shortly be replacing the sand, but I would advise anybody booking here to check first.
