My wife and I spent our honeymoon there in August 1992. Beautiful memories were made. Thought we might go back for our 20th anniversary, so we're very sorry to hear that its gone.

Surprised to find out the Sonesta is gone, was a nice honeymoon in 1990. Now, the marriage is gone as is the hotel. Remarried now and would love to return to Bermuda to make bad memories into fabulous memories!

In the summer of 1990 my wife and I along with my two and six year old daughters took our first trip to Bermuda and stayed at the Sonesta. The hotel was chosen for us by our travel agent as it was a family friendly hotel that catered not only to the business traveler but also to families with children. As others have mentioned it would be hard to find a more friendly staff than that of the Sonesta's and as a result of how comfortable we were made to feel we have returned to Bermuda each summer since, staying at the Sonesta for the next 15 years and one year at the Wyndham.Once the hotel changed ownership the feeling of one big family also disappeared as the staff was reduced by cuts or voluntary departures. The restaurants were never the same and the activities that one could count on like evening movies and bingo and horse racing games were a thing of the past. The new pool and slides in spite of being wonderful for the kids was a bit much and reminded me of water parks in Orlando. Kenny moved to somewhere in Georgia and Dereck I last heard was working at the Southampton Princess, Glen Woods, the Bell-Hop captain has his own business and lives right above the Sonesta grounds on Sentinel Hill. Also Restaurant manager Anthony Santucci also is still on the island. Now twenty-one years later my grown daughters and my wife and I still return each summer staying at the St. Georges Club in St. George and at a smaller but quite nice hotel in Hamilton called the Rosemont. As a result of the wonderful treatment that we received throughout the fifteen years that we spent as guests at the Sonesta from 1990 till 2005 we have come to view Bermuda as our home away from home.

I've been to the Sonesta 1992 and 1993 and had a great time. It was fun to hang out with Kenny (can't remember his last name) at the Beach, as well as with Glenn and Mark Johnson at the secret "employees' beach". I wonder were they ended up working now? It's a wonderful location down there - hope somebody will take care of it soon!

My wife and I honeymooned at both the Sonesta Beach (6 nights) and the Marriott Castle Harbour (5 nights). It seems both are now gone....so sad. We loved both, but the Sonesta Beach had the better location.

Worked at the Sonesta Beach Resort & Spa from "88 to "91 and they were some of the best years of my life. The hotel staff was awesome and we had a great time. I wish Sonesta would take it back and rebuild. Always dreamed of working there again!

Have been to Bermuda many times starting back in 1981 and have stayed at various places but the absolute most memorable stay was at Sonesta. Our family stayed there in 1998, probably at its height as a resort, and we had a great time. Our kids still talk about it and always ask me what's up with the Sonesta. We have been back and always moped past to see if anything is happening to the property.I remember most the children's program. We have never traveled anywhere where my wife and I felt so comfortable leaving the kids with the staff of the children's program (Alex from Australia - was the man)and be able to relax on the beach. The kids would come running up to us and tell us how things went and what they were doing after lunch. Sad, so sad. How does something like that happen? Will it rise again????

Was there in June of 1993 on my "honeymoon". A few years later my ex turned up gay; we divorced. I was in Bermuda June 2010 and saw that the Sonesta had been leveled. Sorry to those who loved it, but I cracked up!

I stayed at the Sonesta on my honeymoon in 1990. Started looking it up again with the hurricane hitting Bermuda today (9/2010). Am really sad to hear that it has been destroyed. The staff back then was indeed exceptional. So much courtesy. I remember the honeymoon package that had 7 course meals, pictures in the arch, and then a special get together for honeymooners with an island band and that special rum punch they make there.

Ah, the childhood memories of Sonesta Beach in 1970. At least we have the home movies.

Stayed there in 1994 and loved the Sonesta. After suffering major hurricane damage in 2003 Wyndham tried to make a go of the re-built hotel and no luck. Its says today on the Bermuda Tourism website that the property is being demolished and will re-open in 2011. But it will not be the same. Loved that property!

Hey Christine, Castle Harbour Hotel is open now but it`s called Tuckers Point Hotel. It`s all been redone.
Christine
We stayed at the Sonesta many times over the years in our 13 trips to Bermuda from 1991-2002 when we took a few years off to have children. Now we are ready to go back and all our favorite places have disappeared! How we long to go back to one of those big beautiful hotels. We have stayed all over the island from Grotto Bay to Elbow Beach but our favorite and most frequently visited was by far Sonesta for its absolutely phenomenal staff, breathtaking location and best kept secret "the employees' beach". So sad to see it gone. Don't forget another island classic also gone by the wayside; the Castle Harbor, another sadly missed property closed now for many years. Eager to hear more about the "Southampton Beach Resort".

Was there in April. It's completely demolished and not even finished cleaning up the debris. Very, very sad. There are no plans to do anything at the moment and most likely not until next year from the looks of the demolition.

We have so many wonderful memories of the Sonesta when we stayed there for our 25th anniversary in 1983. We loved the pool with the dome, the staff, and food.
Todd
Was just in Bermuda in June 2010. Nothing is being built on the site of the Wyndham/Sonesta. Local guides state that nothing is planned as of now.
Belinda
Hey JPP, how can you build and open a resort in less than one year starting from nothing? I don`t know about your statement.
JPP
Good news everyone that is so sad this building is gone. It is under construction now and will open in the summer of 2010 as the Southampton Beach Resort. Stay tuned.
Belinda
What a shame that the building could not be saved. It was such a simple yet beautiful structure that will cost a fortune to rebuild. The loss of all the lovely staff is such a shame.

We spent our honeymoon at the Sonesta in 1973 and was hoping to go back for our 37th wedding anniversary and to renew our wedding vows. So disappointed that Sonesta in no longer. We had such a wonderful time there.
Tim
Looks like "Southampton Beach Resort" will reopen in 2011

We just found out about closing of Sonesta. We stayed there in 1980 and were looking forward to a 2nd honeymoon in 2010. We're so disappointed.
Chris
My wife and I honeymooned at the Sonesta in 1985. It was paradise! We are so disappoined it is no longer open and that we cannot visit the Sonesta for our 25th anniversary in 2010.

I am happy the Wyndham is gone. I absolutely loved the Sonesta. It was truly paradise and the staff was exceptional. Then the Wyndham came in and made it like a Howard Johnson hotel. Compared to the Sonesta - not even the same league. Staff was horrible and rude, food went downhill, the water slides, great for the kids, but for the fact that there were so many people not staying at the hotel using them. And the kids program was not up to par. I don't like to ever leave kids, but to have 1 lunch or dinner where you know the kids are so looking forward to their special time never happened. Glad the Wyndham is closed. I wished a company like Intercontinental could've come in and made it just like it was in the Sonesta days!
Christine
I am absolutely heartsick over this news. I loved the Sonesta, loved the people, loved staying there. What has become of the Bermuda I knew and loved. Will the South P be next. The staff of the Sonesta was exceptional. I new the hotel was doomed when they filled in the pool and built that ridiculous water park. Who ever is in charge of Bermuda's tourism department better take a long hard look back at the 70's and 80's when Bermuda was loaded with middle class families who enjoyed a yearly vacation to Bermuda. I am so sad that my children will never experience "my Bermuda" How very sad for Bermuda and the Sonesta.

Wow! I can't believe they just tore this place down! My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary there and had a great time. It was much more affordable and family friendly than Elbow Beach (which is where we honeymooned). I was searching for the Wyndham as a recommendation to my child's teacher who will be traveling to Bermuda this summer. I'm shocked to find this out. Was it hit in 2005? We were there in 2006 and it seemed fine! I really hope they put up something similar in its place and not price out the "common folk".

The Wyndham hotel has been demolished and nothing has replaced it. Had a look in June 2009 and nothing going on.
Brian
Any updates? So was the hotel leveled? Is there a new hotel in its place? That cove was incredible and the location was perfect. What is happening on the property?
Valerie Thorgersen
I got married there in 2005. What a shame to see it torn down. It was truly a beautiful day and experience.
Deanne
I was there in 2000, 2003 and 2005 and watched it change hands from Sonesta to Wyndham. I'll be honest, it was the best as the Sonesta. They closed it because it was hit by a hurricane. The last time we went was in 2005 and they had half of the resort open, the other half was being worked on due to the hurricane damage (it was hit the hardest on the island) they have pictures in the lobby bar. from what I had heard, there was just too much damage to repair it, so they are tearing it down to rebuild it. I just hope it comes back to what we all loved and knew.

I didn't get to the Wyndham but enjoyed the Sonesta. My husband and I found the hotel and staff to be wonderful and the best vacation that we had ever had. The site is amazing and I look forward to returning. I am sorry to hear that it is being torn down.

Is it still closed? Why did it close? We stayed there in May, 2006 and loved it.

We stayed at Wyndham and loved it. It was the best family vacation we have ever been on. I enjoyed it very much and wish you didn't have to close it and give it a makeover. Please don't make it so expensive we can afford it. I look forward to seeing the new work being done to it.

The Wyndham/ Sonesta is situated on the most prime site in all of Bermuda. The Sonesta has been our family vacation destination for fourteen years. We have seen and experienced first hand the exchange of ownership and it's effects on the hotel over the years. We certainly miss the atmosphere of the old Sonesta, have enjoyed the Wyndham experience, and look forward to many more beautiful family vacations at this wonderful hotel. You can always find tasteful accomodations, but the beauty, peace, and tranquility here is unsurpassed.....takes you away from the rush of everyday living....Thanks

Bring back the Sonesta!! We stayed at the Sonesta twice (95 & 2000), then stayed at the Wyndham (05). Mostly same staff, but it was not the charming Sonesta we had come to love!
Liz
It's a shame it closed. The hotel had its problems but it did have the best childrens programs and activities in Bermuda.
