North Rock Brewing Company

Located on the South Road, this is a great place to stop for refreshments if you’re coming or going to St George, the Crystal Caves or any other attractions on the eastern side of Bermuda. As the name suggests, this pub and restaurant actually brews its own beer. It was opened by brewing fanatics David and Heather Littlejohn in 1997 after an inspirational visit to Martha’s Exchange Brewing Company in Nashua, New Hampshire. North Rock is Bermuda’s first and only brewpub.

The copper kettles and tanks which produce the beer are housed in the main bar room, behind glass. It’s from here that the finished products take a short journey to the ornate, hand-carved mahogany bar before being served to thirsty customers. It’s only about two yards so you can safely bet that it’s pretty fresh. North Rock produces a variety of beers (Whale of a Wheat, Island Pilsner, Somers’ Amber Ale, Johnny’s Scotch Ale, Old Colony Bitter, West India Pale Ale and North Rock Porter) though not all are available at any one time. Somers’ Amber Ale is our favourite. It’s a smooth reddish beer, named after Sir George Somers, that goes well with meat dishes. All beers are served in 12 oz. ‘half pints’ or 20 oz. imperial pints. Four 4 oz. tasters are available to guide the unsure.

As well as beer they also serve pretty decent food. A wide-ranging menu features appetisers such as Beer Battered Onion Rings (sweet Bermuda onions dipped in beer batter and served with a sour cream dip) and Sea Horse Eggs (spicy jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese, breaded and lightly fried, served with a salsa dip). Entrees include Steak and Ale Pie (tender pieces of beef and mushrooms, simmered in North Rock Porter, baked with a puff pastry lid) and Jumbo Garlic Shrimp (nine sizzling jumbo shrimps gently broiled in garlic butter sauce). Patrons can dine indoors or on the shady outdoor patio.

Reservations are recommended for dinner. North Rock has a happy hour (17:00 – 19:00) from Monday to Friday with reduced priced drinks.

Great food and fresh brews. The equipment is now located in Dockyard but the beer is still tasty and fresh!
Jay
Highly recommended. The brewing operation has been moved out to Dockyard, but the beers are still top notch.
Deb
North Rock is no longer a brewing company and the copper kettles are no longer on site.
