Swizzle Inn

Its proximity to LF Wade International Airport means that the Swizzle Inn is one of the first places that visitors notice when they arrive in Bermuda. It may also be one of the last as it’s a traditional place for a last drink when leaving the island. Located in a 17th century house it’s Bermuda’s oldest and arguably most famous watering hole.

The Swizzle Inn is the birthplace of Bermuda’s national drink, the rum swizzle, a potent rum cocktail containing Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. After a few glasses even the hardest of drinkers realise why the pub’s motto is ‘Swizzle Inn, Swagger Out’.

On entering the pub and seeing its graffiti covered walls, patrons will be forgiven for thinking Bermuda has a serious vandalism problem. However, the management actively encourage visitors to write their name or pin a business card on the wall. Every week the management pick a business card and email the winner a free drinks coupon. The guest book is worth checking out; it has entries going back to 1942! Two spacious patios, one at ground level and one upstairs, provide good views of fellow punters falling off their scooters.

There’s something going on most nights at the Swizzle Inn. In the summer there’s usually an entertainer. The Swizzle Inn also hosts special events on certain national holidays and special days (Independence Day, Canada Day, Halloween etc.).

Although many come to the Swizzle just for a drink, they also serve decent food. The lunch menu (served until 18:00) features traditional British pub food like Fish & Chips and Bangers & Mash. Their award-winning Swizzle Burger is almost certainly Bermuda’s best burger. Dinner is served from 18:00 and features the lunch menu plus additional items such as 16 oz Rib Eye Steak (char-grilled and served with sauteed garlic mushrooms) and Ye Olde Steak & Ale Pie (tender beef simmered in savoury vegetable gravy topped with fluffy puff pastry and salad on the side). Their chef also knocks out some great Indian curries.

Patrons who’ve had a few too many drinks and can’t remember actually being in the Swizzle can return the next day and buy a few mementoes in the ‘Swagger Out’ gift shop. It sells Swizzle Inn t-shirts, sweatshirts and other paraphernalia.

We love the Swizzle Inn, and have been their 5 times since our honeymoon in 1960. We will be back in June 2009 with 22 guests for your great rum swizzles. Can't wait!

I think this is probably the only restaurant in Bermuda that DOESN'T automatically add a 15% tip. Good on them.

I have been a Swizzle-guy for about 15 years now. I go to the island once a year. The Bailey's Bay fish sandwich is second to none. Also try the onion rings, wings, burgers and pina coladas. I would not visit Bermuda without going to this fun pub.

There's also a new Swizzle Inn on the South Shore where Paw Paws used to be.

This is a good choice if you're staying at Grotto Bay, which is just down the road. They serve excellent Swizzles. The food isn't anything fancy, just good quality pub food.
