Legal Jobs
As one of the leading offshore jurisdictions Bermuda has more than its fair share of lawyers and legal staff, rumoured to be the highest concentration in the world.
Bermuda has a well-established legal system based on English common law, with the Privy Council in London being its ultimate court of appeal. The governing body is the Bermuda Bar Association. A non-Bermudian lawyer must be employed by a Bermudian and must work as a registered associate (i.e. can’t appear in court) until they have been resident in Bermuda for one year. After living on the island for a year, a non-Bermudian lawyer can apply for admission to the Bar, and if successful can only practice as an employee of a Bermudian lawyer.
Ideally candidates should have qualified in a Commonwealth jurisdiction and have at least 2 years post qualification experience.
Frequent job openings arise for trust and fund lawyers, reinsurance litigators, and corporate/commercial lawyers.
Company secretaries are also in big demand in Bermuda. Successful applicants usually have several years' exprerience under their belt and a qualification (Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators or equivalent).
