Kings Wharf

Kings Wharf and Heritage Wharf are commonly listed as ports of call by many of the cruise ships visiting Bermuda, although they are actually just the names of the cruise ship berths at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Kings Wharf and Heritage Wharf are the only berths in Bermuda capable of handling today’s larger cruise ships.

For the 2009 cruise season, the ships calling regularly at Kings Wharf/Heritage Wharf are the Caribbean Princess, Explorer of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Norwegian Dawn, and the Norwegian Majesty.

There are plenty of things to see and do at Kings Wharf.  Attractions include the Bermuda Maritime Museum and Dolphin Quest, and the Bermuda Art Centre.

Shoppers can visit the Clocktower Mall and a range of other outlets such as the Dockyard Glassworks and the Bermuda Clayworks.

Places to eat and drink include the Frog and Onion Pub.

Visitors wishing to explore other parts of the island should note that Kings Wharf is well-served by Bermuda’s bus and ferry services. Staff at the Visitor Information Centre can provide timetables, maps, and more.

My advice. From Kings Wharf (The Dockyard) take the ferry to Hamilton. It is much faster, and you can take your moped on as well, and the harbor is absolutely beautiful. The bus is OK, but with their narrow roads, and twists and turns, 40 minutes worth of that and I was ready for a stiff scotch!! Also the bus leaves you a hefty walk just to get down to Front Street (the main reason for going there). The ferry leaves you on Front Street not far from the Bird Cage. You can also (May to Oct) take a ferry to St. George, but the last one leaves to come back at 7 PM. As stated, taxis are expensive. Although on arrival, we always found that sharing a large cab with 2 other couples was much better than taking what I call the 'cattle transfer bus' from the airport. Try the Northrock Brewery for dinner. It is a nice restaurant (and a favourite of the locals) and one of the best on the island. The Lobster Pot in Hamilton is always a treat. Make sure you ask for change in US dollars on the last day, Bermuda money is colorful, but you can only spend it there!
