What’s the purpose of a restaurant? Some believe they are for posing in, some believe their purpose is to entertain. At the Speciality Inn their mission is to feed you. Despite having served former US President Jimmy Carter and Clint Eastwood, this neighbourhood diner has no illusions of grandeur.
The Speciality Inn is a family-run establishment more popular with locals than tourists. They’re drawn in numbers by its large portions of unpretentious comfort food, fast and friendly service, and prices that don’t require you to take out a second mortgage. It’s also one of just a handful of restaurants in Bermuda that doesn’t automatically add a tip to the bill. Employees have to work for their gratuities here and it shows. Although it has seating for around 50 it’s not uncommon for diners to have to wait for a table.
The breakfast menu includes English, American, and Italian style breakfasts. Omelettes, pancakes, pasties, and sandwiches (cold and hot) are also available. On Saturday mornings they also serve a traditional Bermudian codfish and potato breakfast.
The lunch/dinner menu features a huge choice of dishes from around the world. There are salads, sandwiches (Tuna, BLT, Meatball Sub etc.) and burgers. Italian offerings include 22 varieties of pizza, plus calzone and stromboli dishes. The restaurant also boasts a dedicated sushi bar where you can order Japanese, appetizers, tempura, sashimi, maki-mono, nigiri and temaki.
The Speciality Inn is open Monday to Saturday, from 6 am until 10 pm. The breakfast menu is served between 6 am and 4 pm, and the lunch/dinner menu all day. The sushi bar is open between 11.30 am and 10 pm. No reservations are required and a take-out service is available.
The restaurant is located on at Collector’s Hill in Smith’s Parish. It’s a great spot for a quick and cheap bite to eat when travelling to or from St George, the Crystal Caves, Spittal Pond, John Smith’s Bay or any other attractions on the eastern side of Bermuda. There’s plenty of free parking for scooters. To travel their by public transport, take bus number 1 (Hamilton to St George).
