The Argo Group (King Edward VII) Gold Cup is one of the world’s premier yacht races and attracts an impressive line-up of sailors. The event is hosted by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and is part of the World Match Racing Tour.
The event is a match race, meaning that all the boats are of identical design (International One Design Class). They compete head-to-head under the same conditions, making it the ultimate man-to-man challenge for the world’s best sailors.
The races take place in Hamilton Harbour. All the action is close to shore, making it an ideal spectator sport. The otherwise private Royal Bermuda Yacht Club throws its doors open to the members of the public wishing to watch the action. The club sets up a viewing area on their docks complete with tents, concessions and bleachers. Admission for spectators is free. The club also hosts a couple of lively evening parties that attract a diverse mixture of locals, expats and members of the yachting fraternity.
