Brown Reveals his Colours

Dr Ewart Brown, who recently quit as Tourism Minister to enter the race to be Bermuda’s next Premier, has revealed his plans for island if his bid is successful. These include a rethink of plans to build a new hospital at the Botanical Gardens and a commitment to gain independence from Britain.

Bermuda Music Festival 2006

Under-19 World Volleyball Championships

The Under-19 World Volleyball Championships will be held Wednesday September 6 to Sunday September 10 on Elbow Beach. Teams from all over the world will compete in the event being organised by the Bermuda Volleyball Association and the Department of Tourism.

Admission is free for the first 3 days and $5 for the weekend games. Play starts at 1 pm (10 am Sunday).

New Hospital at Botanical Gardens

The Bermuda Government has revealed controversial plans to rebuild the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens. Construction will cost around $500 million and will take around seven years to complete.

Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition

The 11th Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition will be held on September 2 at Horseshoe Bay. The event is being organised by the Institute of Bermuda Architects and is sponsored by the Department of Tourism.

Museum Wants to Turn Back Time

The Bermuda Maritime Museum has sought permission to pull down modern structures at its Casemate Barracks. Museum director Edward Harris believes that structures built between 1960 and 1994, when the building was used as a prison, should be removed from the historical attraction.

Movies on the Beach

Month movie buffs will soon get the chance to enjoy a series of blockbuster films on a giant screen at Bermuda’s Warwick Long Bay. The ‘Movies on the Beach’ event will run from August 17 to 20 and feature a different film each evening:

  • August 17: House of Flying Daggers
  • August 18: Nanny McPhee
  • August 19: Lightning in a Bottle
  • August 20: Moonstruck

All films start at 8.30 pm and admission is free. Parking will be available at Chaplin Bay.

The event is being presented by the Department of Tourism and supported by the Bermuda International Film Festival.

Statue Unveiled at the Aquarium

A statue of a grouper fish, made of copper recycled from the roof of Bermuda Cathedral, has been erected at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.

New Bermuda Stamps

The Philatelic Bureau of the Bermuda Post Office has released a series of ‘Made in Bermuda’ stamps featuring the work of local craftsmen and artists including Desmond Fountain and Sharon Wilson.

Church Bay Reopens

Church Bay, damaged by Hurricane Fabian in 2003, was officially reopened last week by Minister of Environment, Neletha Butterfield.
