World Rugby Classic

The 19th World Rugby Classic will be held at the National Sports Centre from November 5 to 11. The tournament features eleven matches between former international players and a women’s international between the Britain and the United States. Tickets are available on the door.

2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf

Bermuda looks set to host its most impressive sports fixture ever. Tourism Minister Dr Ewart Brown claims the island is close to signing a deal that would bring the 2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf to Bermuda.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is an annual 36-hole stroke-play competition that brings together the winners of The Masters, the US Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship. Securing the event would be a massive publicity boost for the island as it is televised live to almost 90 million US homes.

The Mid Ocean Club looks the favourite to host the event, although Tucker’s Point is also in the running. Dr Brown expects to clinch the deal next month at this year’s tournament in Hawaii.

Bermuda Open Golf Championship

The Bermuda Open Golf Championship will be held at the Port Royal Golf Course and will run from October 12 – 15. The event is open to professional golfers and amateurs with a handicap of 6 or less. Total prize money up for grabs is $60,000 with the winner set to scoop $15,000.

Bermuda Festival 2007

The line-up for the Bermuda Festival has been announced. Running from January 11 to March 3, acts featured include ‘living cartoon’ Ennio Marchetto, singer Melba Moore and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Tickets are available from the Visitors Service Bureau on Front Street, November 27 – December 9 2006 and January 8 – March 3 2007.

The venues for the festival are City Hall, Ruth Seaton James Centre and the Daylesford Theatre.

Bermuda Music Festival 2006

The Bermuda Music Festival will run from October 4 to 7. Acts scheduled to appear include:

  • October 4 Fairmont Southampton - Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, The Trammps featuring Earl Young
  • October 5 Royal Naval Dockyard - Gladys Knight, The Original Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston & Blue Lovett, Steve Darrell & Wanda Ray Willis
  • October 6 Royal Naval Dockyard - Charlie Wilson, India.Arie, Anthony Hamilton, The HomeGrown Band
  • October 7 Royal Naval Dockyard - Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Teena Marie, Ras Mykkal and Jahstice, Pulse

Under-19 World Volleyball Championships

The Under-19 World Volleyball Championships will be held Wednesday September 6 to Sunday September 10 on Elbow Beach. Teams from all over the world will compete in the event being organised by the Bermuda Volleyball Association and the Department of Tourism.

Admission is free for the first 3 days and $5 for the weekend games. Play starts at 1 pm (10 am Sunday).

Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition

The 11th Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition will be held on September 2 at Horseshoe Bay. The event is being organised by the Institute of Bermuda Architects and is sponsored by the Department of Tourism.

Movies on the Beach

Month movie buffs will soon get the chance to enjoy a series of blockbuster films on a giant screen at Bermuda’s Warwick Long Bay. The ‘Movies on the Beach’ event will run from August 17 to 20 and feature a different film each evening:

  • August 17: House of Flying Daggers
  • August 18: Nanny McPhee
  • August 19: Lightning in a Bottle
  • August 20: Moonstruck

All films start at 8.30 pm and admission is free. Parking will be available at Chaplin Bay.

The event is being presented by the Department of Tourism and supported by the Bermuda International Film Festival.
