After visiting this hotel for 37 years we just returned for our final visit after reading in the Gazette that it was closing on October 31st. It is a very emotional time for us as there were many happy memories there throughout our many many visits. We feel for many of the staff members who have been there for 20 years as this was their life and they love this place as much as we do. Unfortunately, the current and previous owners do not even know who their long standing and supported clients are and seem not to care about us. It is amazing how many people who have just visited this hotel now cannot believe that it is to be torn down. As avid travelers on the bus, everytime we are on it there is a tourist who looks down upon the Carlton Beach, Sonesta and now Wyndham and say, “Wow, look at that place, it is beautiful” All we will have now are memories etched in our minds and many, many pictures. We will find a new hotel which will probably have some wonderful restauants and staff, but they will never fill the memories we have of the “Wyndham”. It would be nice if they kept us informed of their progress on the new resort but we know we will have to find that out on our own. We have made our tearful goodbye to hotel, its wonderous grounds and of course to the dedicated staff who have gone through so much over the past 10 years of uncertainty.

I WAS JUST THERE IN AUGUST AND IT SHOULD BE TORN DOWN AND REMOLDED IT LOOKED OLD AND NOT UP TO DATE…THE ROOMS WERE NOT ANYTHING SPECTACULAR AND WERE VERY RUN DOWN LOOKING. THE STAFF WAS VERY RUDE AND NOT HELPFUL WHATSOEVER. I WAS NOT SATIFIED WITH THE RESORT AT ALL. NOT WORTH THE MONEY SPENT!

I have vacationed at (Sonesta) honeymooned here, took my children here, parents came here, came with friends, returned with husband for 13th trip – HOW SAD IT HAS CLOSED. Thanks for the (fantastic) memories! I chose the colors of the original dining room carpet (aqua & blue) for my bath colors when I was married! Adios!

My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay at the
Wyndham in Bermuda in Sept. of 06.
It was paradise. The beaches were breathtaking, the pool area was cool, the staff was super friendly, the breakfast buffet was superb. I am so very, very sad we can never go back there and experience it just the way it was…….
Heaven on earth…… Sandy

I worked there for 20 years and it was a sadest day in my life, to see that place closed. It seemed like, no one cared and new management didn’t give a toss. This property will never be what it used to be when it was SONESTA.

I have been traveling to Bermuda since I was a kid. My wife and I honeymooned at Sonesta in the 90’s. We returned with some friends two years later. Both of these vacations were absolutely fabulous! Some of the best vacation memories of my whole life. The Sonesta staff was very accomodating and the facility (while a touch outdated) was kept beautiful. After Fabian we returned to see it as the Wyndham and were grossly disappointed. The place looked terrible! The waterslide thing was cool for the kids, but the rest of the had lost it’s charm. My heart pours out to the long time employees of this place. They always made us feel so at home. It was clear that Sonesta (as I will always call it) was as important to them as it was to us. I will especially remember the gentleman who receives the guests at the entrance named Elliot. I know that he had been working there for decades. Seeing his face when we would pull up was always like seeing an old friend. He was still there when it became Wyndham. It is very sad to see this wonderful place be torn down. I will always remember it fondly… Craig

I am so saddened by the news that the “Sonesta” (as we all knew it) is gone forever. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to spend many beautifully relaxing vacations there with my husband and have many wonderful memories to cherish. I will miss my green-eyed friend, Elliot who greeted me each year upon my return. I was always so pleasantly surprised to see him each time.
Well, I cannot imagine there is another resort on the island that offers the same experience. I will continue my search but as I recall staying in the most expensive place on the island several years ago–it didnt even come close to offering the Sonesta experience. Fortunately, I took many photos from my last vacation to remember the place–I think we should all chip in to buy a condo in 2009…Deb

I am terribly saddened by the news given to me by our wonderful cab driver (now friend) marilyn in bermuda, my husband and I were married there in 04 with our 5 children and we revisited the resort this past august. yes, it may be a bit weathered, however that just keeps it historic! the staff was just wonderful, our kids had a blast and we went there because it was a favorite spot for my mom, now deceased and dad as the sonesta! I was there several times before as well!
I will cherish the photos and i hope you will contact me when the property reopens in 09
there is nothing like the waterfall and the peaceful swimmable beach
I will forever call it the sonesta

My 1st trip anywhere was here in 1973, returned 5 times thru 2001. NEVER had a even a average stay time there. Always excellent in all respects, an outstanding staff and beautiful property!
The hurricane left it damaged in too many ways to restore without major structural work being needed…I hope the rebuilt hotel retains the “nouveau” look it maintained since it was built!

Let’s hope whomever tears it down, brings it back as the Sonesta. We honeymooned at the neighbor property The Reefs; came to Sonesta with our children on two vacations. In 2005, a 3rd trip with the kids, we tried Wyndham; it was just not the same as Sonesta.
‘Ex-Employee’ I wholeheartedly agree with you!!
Thank you Sonesta employees for wonderful memories and kind hospitality.

How sad the news I learned this week that the Wyndham is closing! My husband I were married there 2 years ago this month! 40 people flew down from Boston for our destination wedding! We were there last June for our 1st Anniversery, and had the pleasure of coming home to find out we were pregnant with our first child! This is our Bermuda Baby, and we were anxious to bring her to the Wyndham and introduce her to the wonderful children’s waterpark in another year! I hand picked this resort for my wedding (after viewing several properties in Bermuda) because it had a lot to offer a family, and all ages, in case my wedding guests wanted to bring children. I guess our Bermuda Baby will have to be introduced to a new property! BOO HOO!!!!!!!!! WHO MADE THIS DECISION???!!! This was the best property on the island!

I just clicked onto the website for The Wyndham and found out it has closed! I am so sad and shocked, because a group of friends and my family had vacationed there in July 2006, and had NO idea it was going to close. My husband and I honeymooned there in May 1983 when it was The Sonesta and we were looking forward to coming down to celebrate our 25th anniversary. How sad! We love Bermuda and have been there four times, my first time with my family when I was 16, and just this last time with my own daughter who was 17. I guess we’ll have to settle for another resort, but at least we have our pictures and fond memories!

My sister recently visited Bermuda and said the hotel looked vacant. I just went on-line and discovered Sonesta is closed. Honeymooned at the Sonesta 30 years ago, June 1977. It was very special. Still have the movies and pictures. I chose this hotel because it was the only one right on the water. It was a lucky decision. Jan and I are still happily married and have six children. Perhaps it was the romantic honeymoon at the Sonesta that helped us off to a good start! Everything must change and time surely does fly, but I would like to have taken a second honeymoon here.

I was just logging on to plan a trip to the wyndham this summer. I am shocked that it is closed. We vacationed at the Sonesta a few times and were looking forward to returning to the Wyndham. I am sad:(

We were married at the Wyndham in 2005. I lost my wedding ring in the cove. We wanted to bring our baby this fall and are saddened to hear it is closed!

I am sitting here in disbelievement to find out Sonesta is going to be demolished. My father, Jim Seiferheld, had been going to Sonesta for decades before he started to bring my mother and I there. I am 25 years old now, and I have probably visited Bermuda 30-40 times, many of those times staying in Suite 350, which no longer existed after the hurricane. My father passd away in 2003 and his ashes were actually spread on the Bay Beach at Sonesta in his memory by my brother and I, because Bermuda and Sonesta were where he always wanted to be. In another year or so, I was planning to bring my girlfriend to Wyndham(Sonesta) to propose to her, so that my father could be there to see it. Bermuda and Sonesta will always have a special place in my heart. From all the employees by name, Elliot (the guy out front hailing cabs), Glenn (bellman), Tori Sheppard (Old manager), Dennis Tucker (Old GM of Sonesta), waiters – Tony Bucci, Jose, Augusto, Molly from the ice cream shop, and of course, Cal, the tennis pro, the man I spent most of my time with, because he had some of the pro tennis players from Bermuda play me when I was 11 years old. I would love dearly if some one out there knew how I could reach any of those people. This is truely a sad day to hear that Wyndham gave up on a absolutely beautiful, fantastic place to visit, and gave up on the most friendly, loving employees any vacationer could come in contact with.

My husband were married on the Cross Bay Beach in July of 2002 and thankfully brought our 2 children here to visit in 2005. How sad that the Sonesta (Wyndham) is closed. We always pictured our vacations to Bermuda there.

in 1970 my wife and i stayed at the carlton beach and again when it baecame the sonesta. since then we have stayed at sonesta over 100 times. it was our second home and that to our three children as well. friends made over the years are still friends. the fabric of our lives and those of our children have been interwoven with sonesta. throughout our home are framed Birsey limited edition lithographs given us by the hotel. our memories of sonesta and the staff are very special to us and i will cherish my time there always.

My wife and I honeymooned at the Carlton Beach in 1962. It was a wonderful experience that we never forgot. Went back in 1992, when it was the Sonesta, and that was another memorable time in our lives. It was a shock to hear that the place has been torn down. Let’s hope the new developers will create a magical hotel that will return that priceless piece of Bermuda to it’s former glory. I’ll be looking forward to 2011. As Arnold has stated so forcefully,” We’ll be back.

My wife and I loved the Sonesta and spent many vacations there. In recent years my daughter also accompanied us and it became an annual thing, one we looked forward to each summer. It was a classy place to go with its wonderful and uncrowded beaches and EXCELLENT staff. We came to know many of the staff and they were wonderful! After being hit by the big hurricane, we returned just two more times, the first was when the rebuilding was nearing completion and we understood why things weren’t up to snuff. The following summer when reconstruction was completed, we were very disappointed. The water park was an aberration for a resort! It added NOTHING to the appeal. Also, there was no longer a swimming pool but one which I called a wading pool because it was so shallow throughout. It’s so sad that the Wyndham people bought such an elegant property and absolutely ruined our beautiful paradise in Bermuda!
