The Island Shop is the place to shop for those looking for an island-inspired gift that’s more sophisticated than a coaster or tacky t-shirt. The business is owned and managed by local artist Barbara Finsness.
Finsness, a graduate of the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, came to Bermuda in 1981. She initially sold here unique ceramics and linens through other stores. Their huge popularity, justified a dedicated store, so in 2002 she opened the first Island Shop on Old Cellar Lane in Hamilton. Buoyed by its success, she moved the store to bigger premises on Queen Street and opened branches in St George and at the Fairmont Southampton.
Barbara’s range of ceramic products includes colourful ceramic plates, trays, mugs, cups and vases. All her collections and designs depict images of Bermuda culture, flora or fauna. For example, the Bermuda Cottage series features a colourful image of a typical island house. The design incorporates key elements of Bermudian vernacular architecture such as the limestone roof, shuttered windows, and heavy chimney. Other collections feature Bermuda fitted dinghies, tree frogs, parrotfish, and local flowers like the Bermudiana.
The Island Shop also stocks a range of similarly inspired fabric products. Colourful hand towels, embroidered pillows, scarves and ties grace the shelves. Barbara is always adding new products and designs to her range. Those looking for something just a little out of the ordinary should certainly check out the Island Shop.
